A Non-Profit Organization (NFO) is an entity created and operated for charitable or socially beneficial purposes, not for profit. It can serve causes such as religion, science, education, charity, health, or animal welfare. Registering as a charity with the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) provides key benefits for non-profit organizations, including the authority to issue tax-deductible donation receipts, which encourages donor contributions. Charitable registration also unlocks access to government and private grants that require charitable status. Furthermore, registered charities are exempt from income tax on charitable activities and generally from Goods and Services Tax (GST) and Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) on most goods and services, enabling them to allocate more resources toward fulfilling their missions.

All Federal Non-Profit Organizations must register with the Provincial Government where the head office of your organization is located. Your Federal non-profit organization is not complete without this registration. Proof of an extra-provincial registration is often required for opening bank accounts and for lease agreements. We have included this extra-provincial registration as it is mandatory for all Federal Non-Profit Organizations.

Agent for service: is a contact person for the corporation who resides in Alberta. Government or other agencies may contact the agent for service for official purposes and must be available to respond on behalf of the corporation. Usually a director can be an agent of service.
